Ghost Writer

Treasure by Nancy Atherton is a charming mystery story. It is one of many in a series of Aunt Dimity novels, but the first I have read.

This story takes place in a small country village outside of London where a woman named Lori lives with her husband, twin sons, and baby daughter. She inherited the cottage quite unexpectedly from Aunt Dimity, a friend of her late mother. The closeknit village is populated with quirky people who like to gossip and know each others business. When a new couple move-in, all are aflutter and almost immediately, everyone is taking turns searching for buried treasure with the newcomer’s metal detector. At the same time, by accident, Lori discovers a treasure in her attic which belonged to Aunt Dimity and so the mystery begins.

Having not read the previous books in this mystery collection, I didn’t quite understand the ghostly relationship between Lori and Aunt Dimity. Let it suffice to say, Lori communicates with Aunt Dimity’s spirit by talking to an old journal.

I enjoyed the novel and think it is well-suited for a light summer read.
