Immortality’s Scent

cover_collector_dying_breathsThe Collector of Dying Breaths by M.J. Rose is quite a thrilling novel! Based in part on a perfumer named René le Florentin who worked for Catherine de Medici in the 16th century, this fictional mystery wafts back and forth in time. It skips centuries frequently, but gratefully, the author provided time labels at the beginning of each chapter.

This is a mystical story about a female television personality in the 21st century who is called upon to continue the work of her late brother who was a perfumer. At the time of his death, he was trying to recreate an ancient formula using the last breath of dying people which was purported to be capable of bringing the deceased’s soul back to life.

The novel is full of evil characters past and present. I enjoyed the story and the fact that it had a historical aspect to it. The history of perfuming was especially insightful. If you enjoy a good mystery, I think this is a book you will enjoying inhaling!
