Out of Warranty by Haywood Smith is a humorous novel about a middle-aged widow named Cassie who, like many others in this country, has poor health, a weird disease, and not enough insurance or money to cover her medical expenses. Because Cassie is not old enough to qualify for Social Security, she finds herself between a rock and a hard place.
A Baby Boomer facing similar issues, I identified with the main character and felt her pain. The solution to Cassie’s problem is not one I would choose, but Haywood’s novel is one I recommend. It is quite enjoyable and focuses on the harsh reality of health care for many people of my generation.
