Healing Water

wetI decided to read By the River Piedra I Sat Down & Wept by Paulo Coelho after becoming intrigued by the book’s title on a friend’s Goodreads list.  Coelho is a well-known author (The Alchemist), but this is the first time I’ve read his work.

This novel is about a young woman who reunites with a childhood boyfriend who was living in a seminary.  After discovering she never stopped loving him, she finds herself faced with a monumental decision which will alter their lives forever.

The story is spiritual, but I am not sure whether to take it as such, or as a love story with religious overtones.  It is a short book, so I continued to read on, even though it was a bit too weird for me, just to see how it ended.  If any Bookwinked followers have read or do read this book, I’d appreciate hearing your take on it.  The jury is still out for me!

I haven’t read this book yet, although, like you, I like the title. The other Coelho books I’ve read have been fable-like, semi-spiritual, for lack of a better description. So perhaps it is meant as both a spiritual fable and a love story? I’m intrigued and will read it either way 🙂

Though he has millions of readers worldwide, Coelho doesn’t float my boat. At all.
