Christmas Holiday by W. Somerset Maugham is not a peaceful Christmas story. What it is is an unsettling, thought-provoking story about a young Englishman who is sent by his father to Paris over his Christmas holiday. After arriving in Paris, Charley, the main character, looks up an old school chum who works as a newspaperman. The friend introduces Charley to a Russian prostitute and from that moment forward, the story takes a surprising turn which causes Charley to examine his comfortable life.
This is an eye-opening story and the first I have read by this famous author. It’s not really a Christmas story, but I enjoyed the writing and the plot. Maugham was a great writer.
