Red, White and Blue

The Fourth of July is a great time to read The President’s House by Margaret Truman.

The history lover in me truly enjoyed this book.  I learned many things I did not know about the White House and its inhabitants since 1800.

I came away from this interesting historical book with a renewed understanding that the leaders of our great nation are first and foremost, human beings, just like anyone else.

The book covers many aspects of the White House in addition to the Presidents and their families.  Stories about the gardens and landscaping were pleasing to me as were the stories about the many colorful women who hosted political gatherings in and around the famous House.  Truman also speaks with great respect for the White House staff members and military personnel.

I particularly loved the following quote by President John Adams, our second President and first inhabitant of the White House:

“I pray Heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house, and on all that shall hereafter inhabit it.  May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof.”

If you want to know more about American history, read this book.
