Small Island by Andrea Levy is a well-written story set in the World War II era.  There are four main characters, two in London and two from Jamaica.  Due in large part to the war, their lives become intertwined in unexpected ways.  This is a story about the war, the British Empire, prejudice, and love.

I was very impressed with the way in which the characters were so well-developed.  Although the story shifts back and forth in time and between characters, I thought it was amazing.  Levy’s description of the blitzkrieg in London was eye-opening and, for the first time,  I felt the pain of the poor citizens trying to go about daily life while the Germans repeatedly bombed the city.

PBS made a movie out of the book and I have seen it.  It is pretty good, but not as good as the book which, as is understandable, includes so much more of the story.  I loved this book!
