Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison is an emotional, semi-autobiographical story focusing on the issue of child abuse. Told from the perspective of a young, fatherless girl nicknamed “Bone”, the story is deeply disturbing, but so well written that the reader feels every injustice perpetrated against the defenseless child by her stepfather right along with the helpless victim. Allison expertly writes in the child’s voice and I understand why this book was on the Top 150 list. In 1996, the book was made into a movie directed by Anjelica Huston. Bastard Out of Carolina is a tragic, frightening story and the author has done a masterful job of telling it.
