On the Street Where You Live

A Corner in the Marais by Alex Karmel is a memoir written by a former American now living in the Marais section of Paris.  Karmel and his wife purchased a pied-à-terre in 1982 and his fascination with neighborhood led him to do extensive research into the history of the city of Paris.  While reading the book, I learned a great amount of history and found the book very interesting and informative.  The author discovered that his apartment dated back to the 1300’s and that alone was amazing to me.  I can’t even imagine a building being built that could stand the test of centuries, but that is the case with countless man-made structures around the world.  The U.S. hasn’t been around as long; so my frame of reference is not the same.  The book contains many pictures of the buildings referenced by the author and I appreciated the visual support they lent to the descriptive text.  If you are interested in knowing more about the history of France, this would be a good book to explore.
