The Old West

A Lost Lady by Willa Cather is a bittersweet story told by a young man in Colorado in the days after the Burlington railroads were built connecting the East to the West.  The book was written in 1923.

The young man is enamored with a beautiful young woman married to a man 25 years her senior.  The story however, like other Willa Cather books, is not solely about the young man and the woman he idolizes.  It is also a testament to the early days of the West and the hardworking people who settled it.

Willa Cather wrote some of my all time favorite books.  Her work is beautifully descriptive and heartfelt.  She was a great female writer and historian whose work invites us all into a time long past.
