A Thousand Years of Good Prayers by Yiyun Li is an incredible collection of short stories written by a former Beijing native. I was blown away by Li’s raw, gripping tales. The author has a new, distinctive voice I deeply appreciate. Her characters are memorable, believable, and well developed. One of the stories, “The Princess of Nebraska”, takes place in Chicago during the annual Festival of Lights on Michigan Avenue. Years ago, I attended the parade and the mention of it came as a welcome surprise as the majority of the stories take place in China.
Li’s stories address deep, and sometimes dark, emotions. I found them very powerful and know they will remain with me for a long time. I plan to read her latest book, Gold Boy, Emerald Girl next. This author’s work is well worth reading. I love her style and hope you will too.
